Apprentice in Safety, Health & Environment



Help ensure the safe handling of heavy equipment in a warehouse or garage environment. Make sure our electricians, carpenters and engineers have access to the correct PPE. Help drive safe ways of working and be part of promoting, influencing and improving the safety of every employee across our organisation. Key facts

• Level 3 apprenticeship working towards qualification as a Safety, Health and Environment Technician. On completion, you will also be able to join the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) at TechIOSH Level
• Based at Hanslope Park, Milton Keynes, with the flexibility of hybrid working depending on business need
• 27-month programme, with a potential full-time role at the end
• Combination of practical work and study
• Open to all ages, but you will need:
o A minimum of five GCSEs (or equivalent e.g. O levels) including Maths and English at grades 9-4 (A*-C)
o Good analytical and organisational skills, and be enthusiastic and willing to learn
o To be analytical, organised, enthusiastic and willing to learn
o British citizenship, having lived in the UK for the last three years before the first day of the apprenticeship (aiming to start September 2023), and for at least five of the last ten years
o To be at least 16 years old by 30 April 2023 so you can complete Security Check (SC) clearance before your start date
• Candidates will need to undergo Security Check (SC) clearance before joining, and Developed Vetting (DV) clearance shortly after joining

Your programme
When you start your apprenticeship in September, you’ll be based in our Hanslope Park office as part of our Health, Safety, Security and Quality (HSSQ) team. You’ll combine working as part of the team with your academic studies to gain your qualifications. When you start, you’ll be given an intensive induction of all the departments of FCDO Services and learn how our team supports each function. Overall, you’ll be supporting the team to advise on, maintain and improve the statutory health, safety and environment (HSE) requirements and processes of our organisation.

One day you might be coordinating or helping lead a health and safety training session, the next you could be carrying out a risk assessment, looking for ways to improve conditions and processes. But whether you’re investigating incidents and accidents or advising on HSE legislation in the workplace, you’ll be ensuring the implementation of safe systems of work within our organisation. And all along, you’ll be working towards your Level 3 qualification as a Safety, Health and Environment Technician that you can use to further your studies or springboard your career in the health, safety and environment field. You’ll also be able to join the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) at TechIOSH Level.

When you’re at university, you’ll learn about all aspects of occupation health, safety and environment practices, including:
• The moral reasons for good safety, health and environmental working practices, ensuring no harm to people or the environment
• The statutory health, safety and environmental legislation and sources of associated guidance and information applicable to their working environment. E.g. Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, Management at Work Regulations 1999, Environmental Protection Act 1990, Environment Act 1995
• Appropriate methods for identifying, evaluating and controlling hazards relevant to their workplace
• The difference between occupational hygiene, health surveillance and health and wellbeing campaigns and methods for implementing these in the workplace
• How to plan for Safety, Health or Environmental emergencies – e.g. accidents, exposure to hazardous substances, fire, pollution.

Completing your apprenticeship – and beyond
Complete the apprenticeship, and you’ll gain your Level 3 qualification as a Safety, Health and Environment Technician. You will also be able to join the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) at TechIOSH Level. But where to next? You’ll have a range of options to make your future bigger. We’ll do our best to find you a permanent position with us, working as a professional either in the UK or overseas. Whatever you decide, we’ll do all we can to help you explore your interests and realise your ambitions.
