Knowledge Manager

FCDO Services – formerly FCO Services – helps Government customers, including the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, to protect UK interests across the world. We offer a wide range of services: everything from making earthquake repairs at an Embassy to delivering secure communications technology.

As our Knowledge Manager, you’ll join our ground-breaking Digital Sensitivity Review team who are responsible for reviewing FCDO digital records for release to the National Archives, in accordance with the Public Records Act. This is vital, intricate work, and you’ll play an important role.

Manage information of national importance

For many years, we’ve been responsible for the sensitivity review of FCDO paper files, but we are constantly improving our system and looking to work for a range of Government customers. In 2018, we designed and introduced a new digital sensitivity review system in response to a new requirement to begin releasing digital records. To support this service, you’ll be in charge of compiling and maintaining taxonomies of potentially sensitive words and phrases, helping our reviewers to make decisions as quickly and efficiently as possible.

It goes without saying that you’ll be well-versed in ontology and taxonomy, but you’ll also have the people skills to communicate well and build relationships with customers and colleagues. You’ll make sure everyone understands your role and supports you, and we’ll be looking to you to help improve the already high standards of our review work.

Use your eye for detail to help preserve national security

As you’d expect, the work of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office is complex and sensitive – and their records are too. We make decisions every day that help protect national security, UK relations with other countries and the personal data of individuals. We’re looking for someone with a keen eye for detail; a logical thinker who can bring structure to content and put solutions in place that work for everyone.

You’ll join a small team, where close collaboration and sharing ideas are part of daily life. It means you’ll need to feel at home working closely with others, getting stuck in, contributing ideas and lending a helping hand wherever you can. This is how we uphold our customer promise: to be reliable, responsive and build relationships.

You’ll bring a degree (or equivalent) in a Maths or Science-based subject, along with experience of creating and managing complex taxonomies. We’ll also expect you to be familiar with data analytics environments such as Power BI or Tableau, and you’ll have a knack for translating complex information in a way that anyone can understand.

Bring in-depth experience and have exceptional impact

With your finely tuned analytical skills, astute judgment and can-do attitude, you’ll be someone the whole team turns to for approachable, expert advice. So you’ll give a lot, but you’ll get a lot back too. This is a brand-new role, so you can make it your own and have a strong personal impact. Then there are all the benefits you would expect from an excellent employer, including flexible working, an on-site nursery, a Civil Service pension, and a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. Most importantly, you’ll have a sense of purpose – your skills will contribute to a business that helps protect people, information and assets all around the world.

All our employees have to be security cleared before joining us, so you will need to undergo a vetting process if you’re successful in your application. This role would require you to undergo Developed Vetting (DV) clearance. You can find out more about vetting on out website.
